To some, it may seem unusual to still highlight and celebrate women in this 21st century world. After all, we have a woman CEO at General Motors, a woman president of Harvard University, had a woman Speaker of the House until recently, and had a woman running for president of the United States for the second time in 10 years. We are even going to have a woman on US paper currency – a first since the late 19th century! So, what’s all the fuss some may ask? Let’s consider this. Today, women represent:
- 2% percent of CEO positions at S&P 500 companies
- 18% of hospital CEOs
- 9% of mayors of cities with populations over 30,000
- 9% of S&P board seats
- 20% of US senators
- 29% of US small business owners
Most of these figures are at an all-time high. So, I resoundingly say, “yes”, it is still appropriate and necessary to celebrate the achievements of women in this country and within our communities. So, on behalf of Blue Fin Group, I wish you all a happy International Women’s Day!
